The Doe Boy is a story about a half-Cherokee boy named Hunter a hemophiliac in a culture obsessed with blood identity. In a tribe populated by full-blood, half-bloods, and mixed-bloods, what do we make of an Indian whose blood wont stay in his body? At an early age, it is obvious that Hunter will not follow in the rugged footsteps of his father, Hank. Hank makes a living working with his hands and is an avid hunter. The guarded life that Hunter must live in order to avoid injury separates him from his father, Hank, as well as the other boys in his community. The constant worry of his overprotective mother, Maggie (Jeri Arrendondo) only frustrates Hunter further. Still, Hunter longs to impress his father in spite of the disease. When Hank decides to take Hunter on a hunting trip, Hunter is thrilled. By killing a buck, he will take his place among the generations of hunters in his family, return to school a hero, and win his fathers approval once and for all. This is NOT to be. Hunter accidetally kills a doe, which is taboo. The disappointment he sees in Hanks eyes devastates him. What could have been a magical rite of passage turns into a crisis of manhood. But there is redemption for those who journey to find it. And there is love for those who learn to give it. Even when your blood turns against you. |
